Close your eyes for a minute, never mind, if you do that you can’t read. Let’s go this route…in your brain radio play the song “Born to be Wild”. What comes to mind? For me, it’s a guy on a motorcycle, wind blowing through his hair without a care in the world. Motorcycles are fun, that’s why people have them!!
Blame it on gas prices, purchase price versus a car, or a generation of folks who love the freedom of the open road, there are more motorcycles on the road than ever. Since 1998, the number of motorcycles on the road has increased by 34 percent!!
Here’s a couple of different viewpoints on the topic…my husband happens to own and drive a motorcycle to work on a daily basis and I’ve never even been on one.
From the motorcyclist standpoint-
-Give me some room to move. I have to avoid water puddles, patches of rock, and sand.
-Stay far enough behind me that if I go down, you have enough time to stop.
-Look twice, the second time you may see me.
-When you see me coming realize that your depth perception may be off because of the size of my motorcycle. I may be going faster than you think.
-Remember that just as you have to make changes to the way you drive your car in inclement weather, I have to make adjustments as well. You may not be blown around by the wind as much as I will be.
From the auto drivers standpoint-
-Lane splitting in Florida is not legal and most people don’t know how to react when it’s done.
-When you stop in traffic behind me, please stay a safe distance away from my bumper.
-Please wear clothing that makes you more visible.
-Just because you can maneuver in and out of traffic easier than I can, you should still use the proper signals and maintain lane distances.
-It would be great if you refrain from cranking up your “hog” at 5:30 am while I’m sleeping.
Looking at this issue, the reality is, if we just follow the rules of the road we can all coexist safely.
