Almost seems like a question that answers itself doesn’t it? I’d like to say I understand it 100%, but in researching data for this subject, I can honestly say I don’t get it….
I understand that we Americans like to be entertained. Look at what actors/actresses make for their “art”. I also get that there are many reasons for us to WANT to attract these incredibly gifted people to play sports that we enjoy…it IS entertaining to see your favorite player, on your favorite team act as “hero” in a big game. That is certainly part of the plus side.
But then there’s this:
2009-2010 NBA top player salaries – $19 – $24 million per player(in contrast, Lebron James will make $14.5 million in his first year as a member of the Miami Heat…not to worry though, his salary increases 1.5 million PER SEASON for the next 5 years).
2009-2010 Top 2 player salaries in major league baseball – $33 and $24.3 million respectively.
2009-2010 Top 2 NFL player salaries – $25.5 and $22 million respectively.
2009-2010 Top 2 NHL player salaries – a more down to earth $10 and $9 million respectively.
Compare that to:
2009 salary to a mid-range enlisted person in the US military ranked E-5 – $26,267 average annually.
2008-2009 school years for a Florida teacher – $46,938 average.
Now I won’t begrudge talent, nor will I take anything away from someone that earns their living honestly and who’s to say they aren’t doing that? I can’t…and there’s the added issue that their salary is, in finality, actually decided by a team owner…not by me or anyone else that might be a fan.
I DO think there is SOMETHING wrong with the above…do we really value or entertainment more than our kids education or our military? I don’t think so, but if you look at those numbers above?!? Tragic to a degree, no?
